The foundation of the "Lower Saxony Research Centre for Vehicle Technology" (NFF) as an interdisciplinary centre is aimed at establishing the Braunschweig region as an outstanding location for automotive research with international visibility. This in turn assists in safeguarding the innovative strength and sustainability of Lower Saxony as a car-manufacturing location. The Wolfsburg site on the MobileLifeCampus was opened on 13 February 2009.

The NFF is primarily concerned with future-critical issues in automotive engineering research. Fields of research being examined by interdisciplinary teams are "The intelligent vehicle", "The low-emissions vehicle", "Flexible vehicle concepts" and "Framework conditions and mobility concepts".

The NFF's research programme is based on the vision of a "metropolitan car". It is focused on the development of innovative vehicle technologies and usage models with the goal of satisfying individual mobility demands in conurbations in a sustainable manner.

The three universities involved - Braunschweig Technical University, Clausthal University of Technology and Leibniz University Hannover - are amalgamated within the Lower Saxony Technical University (NTH), whereby the key research areas of each institution are clearly defined and harmonised. Braunschweig Technical University is examining "Mobility and transport", a strategic field of research.
Playing a key role in this work are the numerous automotive and transport-related research institutes in the Braunschweig/Wolfsburg region, including Braunschweig Technical University, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Braunschweig/Wolfenbüttel University of Applied Sciences and Braunschweig University of Art.
